intrigued by the thought of a “better life”
they hurried and rushed
packing themselves up straight to the new country
a single faceted dream they had
they were greeted by difficulty
working 9-5s that pull down their smile
do it all for family
they work till they drown
but anything to keep those kids happy
as the little ones roll dice and move game pieces
with that glimmering hope in their laughter
they’re emptying out their pockets looking
for money that isn’t there
minimum wage isn’t enough somehow
not even enough to pay rent
how do you survive in a continent
that seemingly pushes you to fall below
you were so sure that moving here was the right choice.
they create a beautiful mirage
of something that is unattainable
by the average american
unfortunate how societies like ours
are so indulgent in being superior
in whichever way possible
that they aren’t resourceful enough
to their own people
we’re pushed so far apart
the definition of an american dream
becomes a blurred line
what
what even is the american dream
when there’s been borders all our lives
