our brave travelers of history
exhausted from feeling trapped
crafted the mayflower
to carry them and their vigor to someplace new
in hopes of living freely
unsure of their adventure
they unknowingly set the foundation
of a life we have revolutionized
two hundred forty-five years ago
our fathers stood as one
claiming our country as its own
breaking away from the clutches of control
today
we stand diversely
culturally, religiously, spiritually
embracing our differences and
celebrating our country’s birthday
and thinking of those who fought for us
who did the hard work so we didn’t have to
they truly are just like our parents.
those men who sat through debate after debate
to perfect the first document that defined us as a country
those people who rebelled, constantly advocating for justice
despite the obvious consequences
but competently pushing us forward
we honor it all
our treasure
our liberty
our individuality
our independence
